Lipid reduction: guidelines insufficiently followed

Elevated blood lipid levels are a risk factor for heart attack. Therefore, attempts are being made to lower these levels with statins. The professional societies have published guidelines that show when and at what level these drugs should be administered.

A study commissioned by the Swiss Medical Board (SMB) has examined the prescription of statins in Switzerland and found that the guidelines are not followed sufficiently. The study was recently published in the journal "Swiss Medical Weekly".
