Vertebral fractures as a result of osteoporosis (bone loss) can be stabilised by cement injections (vertebroplasty or kyphoplasty). The medium-term side effects of cement injection by comparison with conservative treatment are, however, questionable. The Swiss Medical Board also recommends that more precise evaluation of the patients on which surgery is effective through prospective trials.
