Acute or subacute lumbar radiculopathies due to herniated discs: conservative versus operative treatment (2015)

The Swiss Medical Board, in its latest report, investigated whether a herniated disc should always be operated upon. It came to the conclusion that, in the acute phase, provided that there are no function-specific motor impairments or symptoms, conservative treatment is to be preferred to operation. If, however, this is unsuccessful after approximately three months or if the condition worsens, surgical intervention should be considered and the patient provided with objective information concerning this.
